We’re proud to share that Washington, D.C. is the first Playground officially live on our platform!
D.C. is more than just the nation’s capital—it’s a city filled with diverse neighborhoods, strong community pride, and a deep-rooted sports culture that starts at the local level. From recreation centers and school-based programs to nonprofits creating opportunities for kids across the city, there’s a lot happening here.
But like many places across the country, that ecosystem is fragmented. Programs exist, opportunities exist, but they’re not always easy to find.
Families are often left searching across multiple websites, relying on word-of-mouth, or missing opportunities altogether. At the same time, organizations doing incredible work remain hidden simply because they lack the resources to promote themselves.
The Real Problem We’re Solving
The United States is one of the only developed countries without a centralized system for youth sports.
That creates a ripple effect:
- There’s no single place to find all local programs
- Organizations rely heavily on marketing or word-of-mouth
- Families miss opportunities that are right in their backyard
Over time, this leads to something bigger—access becomes tied to visibility, and visibility becomes tied to budget.
That’s not how it should work.
What We’ve Built in D.C.
With this launch, we’ve started to map out youth sports opportunities across Washington, D.C. in one place.
On PlaygroundStars, families can:
- Discover local youth sports organizations in their community
- Explore different types of programs and offerings
- Begin to see the full picture of what’s available nearby
For organizations, it means something just as important:
- They can be discovered regardless of their marketing budget
- They have a space to showcase what they offer
- They become part of a connected, community-driven ecosystem
This is just the beginning—but it’s a meaningful first step toward something much bigger.
A City Built on Community Sports
Washington, D.C. has long been a city where sports play a powerful role in the community.
Across neighborhoods, you’ll find parks, recreation centers, and organizations working every day to give kids a place to play, learn, and grow. Many of these programs go beyond sports, providing mentorship, structure, and a sense of belonging.
They don’t always get the spotlight.
But they are the foundation.
And they deserve to be seen.
What We Learned Building Our First Playground
Launching Washington, D.C. gave us an inside look at just how complex—and how promising—the youth sports landscape really is.
A few things stood out immediately:
- There are far more organizations than most people realize
- Many are doing incredible work with limited visibility
- The information exists—but it’s scattered across too many places
It reinforced something we already believed going into this:
The issue isn’t a lack of opportunity.
It’s a lack of connection.
Why This Matters
This isn’t just about building a directory.
It’s about access.
Kids can’t join programs they don’t know exist. Families can’t make informed decisions if they can’t see the full picture. And communities can’t reach their full potential if the people and programs within them aren’t connected.
We believe that equity in youth sports starts with visibility—and visibility shouldn’t come with a price tag.
What’s Next
Washington, D.C. is just the starting point.
We’re continuing to build out more Playgrounds across the country—mapping organizations, connecting communities, and creating a place where every opportunity can be seen. Each new city brings us closer to a more connected and accessible youth sports experience.
This will take time. But we’re building it the right way.
