We just didn’t realize how much it would surprise us.
It’s Not Just One Playground
When we first started mapping Washington, D.C., we kind of thought of it as one big “Playground.” Simple enough, right?
One city. One map.
Not even close.
What we quickly realized is that D.C. isn’t one Playground. It’s a collection of many.
Different neighborhoods.
Different communities.
Different pockets of activity.
And each one has its own rhythm.
What We Mean by “Playground”
We’ve been using that word a lot—so it’s probably worth defining. When we say “Playground,” we’re not just talking about a physical park. We mean something bigger.
👉 A Playground is your local community.
It could be:
- A city
- A county
- A district
- A township
- Even a neighborhood
It’s the place where youth sports actually happen.Where kids grow up playing. Where families show up every week. Where organizations build their roots. And what surprised us about D.C. is just how many of these “Playgrounds” exist within a relatively small geographic area.
The Density is Real
D.C. isn’t the biggest city. But when it comes to youth sports. It’s packed.
Programs layered on top of programs. Opportunities within minutes of each other.
Different organizations serving different communities in different ways.
You could move a few blocks and find:
- A completely different program
- A different sport
- A different vibe altogether
That level of density changes things. It means more options.
More access. More opportunity—if you can see it.
The Variety Blew Us Away
We expected the usual suspects. Basketball.Football. Baseball. Soccer.
And those are all there. But what surprised us was everything else.
Rowing programs along the water.
Hockey.
Table tennis.
Dance.
Tennis.
Track.
And more.
It’s not just a sports scene. It’s a movement scene.
There’s something for every type of kid:
- The ultra-competitive
- The just-for-fun player
- The kid trying something new
- The one still figuring it out
That diversity matters more than we expected. Because it’s not just about playing sports. It’s about finding your thing.
Every Playground Feels Different
One of the more interesting things we noticed. No two Playgrounds feel the same.
Even within D.C.
Some are:
- Highly structured
- Organization-heavy
- Easy to navigate
Others feel:
- More grassroots
- More community-driven
- A little harder to find—but incredibly impactful
And neither is better. They’re just different.
That’s what makes mapping this so interesting.
It Reinforced Why We’re Doing This
All of this— The density. The diversity.The different Playgrounds layered together—
It kept bringing us back to the same thought:
There’s so much here.
More than most people realize. But unless it’s all visible in one place, you’re only seeing a fraction of it.
This Is Bigger Than We Thought
D.C. showed us something early:
This isn’t just about helping people find a program.It’s about helping people see the full picture of what exists in their community.Because once you see it… You start to understand it differently. You start to explore more. You start to realize what’s possible.
And We’re Just Getting Started
If this is what one city looks like…We can’t wait to see what comes next. Every Playground we build is going to teach us something new.
