Bio

Dave Bing is one of the most accomplished athletes and civic leaders ever to come out of Washington, D.C. Growing up in Northeast D.C., Bing overcame significant challenges, including a childhood eye injury that permanently affected his vision. Despite being told he was too small to succeed in basketball, he developed into a star at Spingarn High School, earning All-American honors and following in the footsteps of fellow D.C. legend Elgin Baylor. Bing went on to star at Syracuse University, where he became one of the greatest players in school history and a consensus All-American, proving that determination and hard work could overcome any obstacle.nnBing's success continued in the NBA, where he played 12 seasons, earned seven All-Star selections, won the 1967 NBA Rookie of the Year Award, captured the league scoring title in 1968, and was later inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Yet his impact extended far beyond basketball. After retiring, he built a successful steel company that grew into one of Michigan's largest minority-owned businesses, earned recognition from President Ronald Reagan as National Minority Small Business Person of the Year, and later served as the Mayor of Detroit. Through athletics, business, public service, and philanthropy, Dave Bing's life demonstrates how youth sports can serve as a launching pad for leadership, opportunity, and lasting community impact.
