Elgin Baylor

Elgin Baylor is widely regarded as one of the greatest basketball players in history and one of the most influential athletes ever to come out of Washington, D.C. Growing up in a segregated city, Baylor faced barriers that limited access to basketball facilities for African American youth, yet he still developed into a local legend. After starring at Spingarn High School, where he set scoring records and became the first African American player named to Washington's All-Met team, Baylor earned his opportunity through determination and talent. His rise from neighborhood playgrounds and recreation leagues to national prominence remains one of the most inspiring youth sports stories in D.C. history.nnSelected first overall in the 1958 NBA Draft, Baylor transformed professional basketball with his creativity, athleticism, and high-flying style of play. An 11-time NBA All-Star, 10-time All-NBA First Team selection, NBA Rookie of the Year, and member of both the NBA 50th and 75th Anniversary Teams, he helped revolutionize the game and inspired generations of stars who followed.
