Bio

Kermit Washington is one of the most unique basketball success stories to come out of Washington, D.C. Growing up in challenging circumstances, Washington faced instability, poverty, and self-doubt throughout much of his childhood. A shy teenager who averaged only four points per game during his senior year at Coolidge Senior High School, few would have predicted he would become a professional basketball star. Through relentless work ethic and determination, he transformed himself at American University, where he developed into one of the greatest players in school history. Washington became a two-time Academic All-American, earned a degree in sociology, and joined an elite group of NCAA players to average 20 points and 20 rebounds for an entire collegiate career. His remarkable growth from overlooked high school player to national standout remains one of the most inspiring examples of perseverance in Washington, D.C. sports history.nnSelected fifth overall in the 1973 NBA Draft by the Los Angeles Lakers, Washington played ten seasons in the NBA and became known as one of the league's premier rebounders and defensive forwards. While many remember him for his involvement in the infamous 1977 on-court incident with Rudy Tomjanovich, his full story is far larger than a single moment. Washington battled back from career-threatening injuries, earned an NBA All-Star selection, and became a respected leader for teams including the Lakers, Boston Celtics, San Diego Clippers, and Portland Trail Blazers. His journey from an overlooked D.C. teenager to an NBA All-Star demonstrates the power of resilience, personal growth, and the life-changing opportunities that sports can provide.
