Walt Williams

Walt Williams was one of the most important figures in the history of Maryland basketball and a standout NBA player whose leadership helped revive a storied college program during one of its most challenging periods. Raised in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area and a graduate of Crossland High School, Williams developed into one of the nation's top recruits. Nicknamed "The Wizard" for his smooth shooting and scoring ability, he arrived at the University of Maryland at a time when the program was reeling from the tragic loss of Len Bias and facing significant NCAA sanctions. Rather than transfer elsewhere, Williams stayed committed to Maryland and became the cornerstone of Coach Gary Williams' rebuilding effort. His loyalty and leadership helped restore credibility to the program and laid the foundation for future success. As a senior, he averaged a school-record 26.8 points per game, earned All-America honors, and broke several scoring records previously held by Bias.nnSelected seventh overall in the 1992 NBA Draft by the Sacramento Kings, Williams went on to enjoy an 11-year NBA career with the Kings, Miami Heat, Toronto Raptors, Portland Trail Blazers, Houston Rockets, and Dallas Mavericks. Known for his deadly outside shooting and trademark knee-high socks inspired by his childhood hero George Gervin, Williams scored more than 8,000 points during his professional career and represented the United States in international competition. Off the court, he established a scholarship fund at Maryland to support minority students and later became an author, broadcaster, and youth coach. His story is a powerful example of loyalty, perseverance, and using sports as a platform to create opportunities for future generations.
